Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those others that have been tried from time to time.
And slowly the end of democracy comes closer, to make place for new forms of government in which civilians are the boss...
In a time in which we can directly ask people for their opinion through their mobile phones, the daily practice is still that once every four year we are expected to come to the polls to vote for a person and/or party which we partially agree with. Partially, definitely not completely. And then that party or person daily makes decisions, which very often are compromises which are interconnected with totally different subjects.
Anyway, this form of involvement was a lot better than it was in the time of dictatorships in which regents, kings or emperors had all the power. And who just made decisions following their own opinion.
At the beginning of the 21st century we are all excited about the ‘stemwijzer’ (vote helper), a smart tool to help you determine your compromise. You answer 35 propositions, telling exactly what you want, and then a compromise choice is suggested. While you have just said exactly what you want.
In the new forms of government which will come into being, civilians will be more involved than ever before. Whatever it is the consumer really wants, that is what will be used, that is what the tax money will be spent on. Before we get there, we will have to go through a small (or maybe even big) revolution. So that in the end we can have a dialogue with our government at any moment we like, so that we can really tell them what we want. I wonder what Churchill would think of this new form..
